The situation
Evolving MITRE’s Brand for Public Visibility and Growth MITRE is a not-for-profit organization working in the public interest across federal, state, and local governments, as well as industry and academia. Its work spans some of the most advanced areas of innovation, including artificial intelligence, data science, quantum information science, health informatics, cybersecurity, space security, and national infrastructure. With roots in Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), MITRE has historically not needed to build broad brand recognition. Its reputation was established through deep technical expertise and long-standing government relationships. But as MITRE expanded into public-private partnerships and faced increasing competition for top talent, the need for a more visible, cohesive, and accessible brand became clear. Tank partnered with MITRE to develop a scalable brand strategy and visual identity system that could clearly communicate its complex capabilities while elevating its presence across recruitment, partnerships, and public engagement. The work focused on creating a distinctive brand language and a set of recognizable brand devices that highlight MITRE’s areas of impact, all anchored in a single, unifying mission: Solving Problems for a Safer World.

A Sharpened Focus for Complex Systems
As the pace of technological and societal change accelerates, the threats to public safety, security, and health continue to grow in scale and complexity. MITRE operates at the center of these challenges, requiring a brand system capable of communicating highly complex information with clarity, speed, and precision.
Tank’s brand design exploration led to the development of a distinct visual identity system built to simplify complexity and guide understanding. At the core of this system are two powerful and scalable brand devices.
The highlighter device reflects MITRE’s ability to process vast amounts of data and surface the most critical insights. It creates immediate focus, helping audiences quickly identify what matters most across complex subject areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and national infrastructure.
The framing device extends this capability by directing visual attention to MITRE’s core areas of impact. It brings structure to imagery and content, emphasizing both the technical focus and the human outcomes of MITRE’s work.
Together, these elements form a cohesive brand language that translates complexity into clarity, enabling MITRE to communicate its expertise, priorities, and real-world impact across a wide range of audiences and platforms.

Beyond the introduction of core brand devices, Tank partnered closely with MITRE’s marketing team to develop a comprehensive set of brand guidelines designed to ensure consistency, clarity, and scalability across the organization.
Brand launch

The initial phase of brand implementation focused on an internal launch across MITRE’s corporate offices, recognizing that long-term success depends on adoption from within. Before scaling externally, the priority was to build alignment, understanding, and momentum among employees and key stakeholders.
Tank developed a coordinated internal brand launch that included a launch video and a series of campaigns designed to clearly communicate the intent behind the new brand system. The effort focused on helping teams understand not just what changed, but why it matters, connecting the brand directly to MITRE’s mission and day-to-day work.
By prioritizing internal engagement and brand education, MITRE was able to build early enthusiasm and create a strong foundation for consistent brand expression. The approach reinforced a simple idea: when employees understand and believe in the brand, they become its most powerful and authentic advocates.
